Stuart Batterman is Professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health and Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is Center Director of the NIOSH-supported T42 Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering, Leader of the Exposure Assessment Core of the NIEHS-supported P30 Michigan Center of Lifestage Exposures and Disease, and Center Director of the NIEHS-supported T32 Environmental Toxicology and Epidemiology Program. He has been engaged with research, teaching and service in occupational and environmental health for over 35 years, and has over 200 peer-reviewed publications in air quality and exposure assessment. His ongoing research includes: quantifying air pollution exposures using models and measurements, especially traffic-related air pollutants; utilizing a mobile air quality laboratory to develop high resolution maps of pollutant levels; evaluating indoor and outdoor air quality exposures; characterizing worker exposure associated with e-waste disposal waste; evaluating lead levels and exposures in drinking water systems; using health impact assessments to quantify impacts of air pollutants; exploring the influence of environmental factors on the onset and progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and other diseases; and using biological monitoring and other techniques to quantify human exposure to persistent and bioaccumulative contaminants.
