Biography-Sherman Fan
Professor Xudong (Sherman) Fan
Mechanical Engineering

Prof. Fan obtained B.S. and M.S. from Peking University in 1991 and 1994, respectively, and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 2000. He is Professor of College of Engineering and School of Medicine at the University of Michigan, the Director of NIH Microfluidics in Biomedical Sciences Training Program, the Thrust Leader of Center for Wireless Integrated MicroSensing and Systems, and the Associate Director of Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care.
Prof. Fan’s research lies in the interface of photonics, engineering, microfabrication, microfluidics, and biomolecular analysis, bioinstrumentation, and biomedicine. In particular, his lab is pursuing ultra-sensitive optical label-free sensors, microfluidic lasers, optofluidic bio-lasers, high-performance micro-gas chromatography, breath analysis for disease diagnosis/prognosis, high-speed ELISA, miniaturized vapor sensors, wearable devices, and ultrasound detection.
Prof. Fan has over 160 peer-reviewed publications and ~30 issued/pending patents. Presently, he serves on the Editorial Board of Lab on a Chip and Advanced Materials Technologies. In addition, he works as a chair and organizer of numerous conferences for OSA, SPIE, Pittcon, and MRS. In 2018, He served as a Founding Chair for Gordon Research Conference “Lasers in Micro, Nano and Bio Systems” series. Prof. Fan is Fellow of Optical Society of America, SPIE, and Royal Society of Chemistry. He was recently awarded by the University of Michigan College of Engineering Rexford E. Hall Innovation Excellence Award (2018) and Monroe-Brown Foundation Research Excellence Award (2017), respectively.
